The maternal fetal interface is characterized by genetic conflict between the placenta and the endometrium. Here, we demonstrate that a placental trophoblasts alter maternal placental bed in a way that enhances their own invasion into the maternal tissues.

 

Placental invasion could therefore be described as a combination of competition and cooperation between the maternal and fetal tissues.
